Milwaukee Bucks Roster Report 2008-04-30

Milwaukee Bucks Roster Report 2008-04-30
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Center Andrew Bogut took a significant step toward justifying the Bucks making him the No. 1 overall selection in the 2005 NBA draft. After registering 12 double-doubles as a rookie and then 19 double-doubles last year, the 23-year-old Bogut finished with 38 double-doubles this season.

MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: After he signed a lucrative six-year, $51 million contract last summer, big things were expected from Mo Williams. But while the point guard averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 assists, he was a sieve on defense and did a poor job of getting his teammates involved in the offense. What's more, Williams had issues with some teammates and coaches, including a heated exchange with assistant coach Tony Brown.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: Every one of the Bucks' regular starters -- Mo Williams, Michael Redd, Desmond Mason, Yi Jianlian and Andrew Bogut -- along with their top reserves -- Charlie Villanueva, Desmond Mason and Charlie Bell -- is under contract for next season. The only players who will become free agents -- all unrestricted -- on July 1 are Jake Voskuhl, Michael Ruffin and Royal Ivey. The Bucks have a team option on Awvee Storey.

It's unlikely the Bucks will make any concerted effort to retain any of those players as they are expected to make sweeping changes.

--F Yi Jianlian, the sixth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, had a solid season. He averaged 8.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in 66 games before being shelved the final eight games of the season with a sprained left knee and soreness in his right elbow. Yi had several strong showings with his best being a 29-point, 10-rebound performance against the Bobcats on Dec. 22. Bucks officials are hoping the 238-pound Yi will add some weight and strength this summer.

--G Michael Redd came to training camp in the best shape of his life and, for the most part, played at a high level. While his scoring average for the season dipped by almost three points from the 26.7 points per game of last season, he improved his rebounding (3.7 to 4.3 this season) and assists (2.3 to 3.4 this season). While Redd said the losing has worn on him, he said he's still committed to playing for the Bucks and doesn't want to be traded.

--F Charlie Villanueva was hoping to have a breakout season, but instead foundered while coming off the bench behind rookie Yi Jianlian. Villanueva, who is an explosive scorer, was shopped at the trading deadline in February and will likely be on the trading block again this summer.
